MASK: Using Astrophysics and LASERS to Help Prevent The Spread of Covid19
Time & Location
About the Event
You may have seen the photo above in national media. It was the winner of Science Foundation Ireland’s Research Image of the Year 2020. The image was created by a team studying the effectiveness of mask materials at CIT, CAPPA and BCO. One particularly cool aspect of the MASK (Making Aerosol Safety Known) study is that it combines powerful lasers, with software ordinarily used in astronomy, to measure the sizes of the droplets exhaled by study subjects!
To learn more about this awesome project, tune in to our livestreamed discussion with members of the research team on Thursday at 7pm as part of the Cork Science Festival.
The talk will stream live on CIT Blackrock Castle Observatory’s YouTube channel. You can ask questions of the team on the night, or submit them to us ahead of time at info@bco.ie using the subject line “Mask”.
