Primary School Workshops
Lifetime Lab – FULLY BOOKED – Maths Works Mobile aims to demonstrate and explore a multi sensory approach to the learning of mathematics and is a stimulating and fun introduction to elementary maths, motivating pupils to engage maths through sight, sound, touch and movement. Over the full school day, four sessions are available with each workshop including a short presentation before participating in a series of hands on fun math’s based activities covering multiplication, symmetry, problem solving and transformations. CIT Blackrock Castle StarDome – FULLY BOOKED – The universe in your own school hall with StarDome, the portable planetarium. Discover the night sky with shows suitable for all ages of primary children. The StarDome will visit your school for the full day and can accommodate 35 children for each 30 minute show.Complete our school enquiry form and we will be in touch.
Lismore Science Centre – FULLY BOOKED – Classroom CSI is a one hour forensic science workshop where everyone is a suspect with teamwork and note taking key to cracking the case. Your class will deduce,decide and discover the secrets and tricks of real C.S.I. Cork Electronics Industry Association (C.E.I.A.) – FULLY BOOKED – Electronic BrainBox is a great introduction to the world of advanced electronics. Primary School children will learn how to build exciting electronic experiments – safely and easily. The parts are plug and play with no tools or soldering required. APC Microbiome Institute – FULLY BOOKED – Food for Thought (5th & 6th class) is a fun exciting and hands-on workshop/talk about the science of the brain and how it interacts with our food and digestive system to keep our bodies and minds healthy.During the visit, students will examine a life size replica of the brain and learn about how the brain works. Anyone 4 Science – FULLY BOOKED Bright Sparks, the hair raising story of Electricity is adaptable for all ages. Younger children will learn about static electricity and will prove that it is a form of energy, while older children (3rd class and above) will learn about the discovery of current electricity, what cola drinks and frogs legs have in common, why Galvani and Volta fell out, and much more. INFANT – FULLY BOOKED Bloody Detectives & Electric Brain Workshops – Could you be a bloody detective? Find out what blood is made of, solve mysteries of hidden clues and protect the evidence! Make your own bloody mixture and turn your home freezer into a bio-bank! THEN discover how your brain is full of electricity – find out what it’s made of, how it works, learn how we can trick it and see some brain waves in real time! . Experience with INFANT how working with these mystery molecules may help save the lives of mums and babies, and how electrical engineers help newborn babies. Science Shows – Firkin Crane
Have you ever wondered why bubbles float? Why we can see rainbows in bubbles? Why bubbles are round? Can we make bubbles in other liquids? What is the secret behind big bubbles? Come and join Scientific Sue at the Firkin Crane on Friday 18th November to answer these and questions we have to enter the Magical World of Bubbleology. With the help of lots of volunteers Sue will attempt to show many incredible bubble tricks and then relate them to Science. Contact US to book.
The Sum of All Parts – Cork County Library Headquarters
The Sum of All Parts by Angela Gilmore looks at the hidden architecture within scientific instrumentation and the intricate mechanisms that record our surroundings which promotes the bringing together of all parts Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. Comprising of science-influenced art installations that consist of deconstructed instrumentation, selected from a variety of time periods, and will in particular link with physics, maths and technology. The Secret Spectrum – Holyhill Libary Tuesday 15th (11.00am) – invite only
Learn how to make your very own DIY spectroscope, which is a special machine used to help us see to secret patterns of light around us. Test out your own version with help from the researchers of Irish Photonic Integration Centre (IPIC) and see how different light has different colour patterns. Suitable for children age 6-13.
Learn it LEGO Education – Cork Central Library Tuesday 15th – invite only
With a number of distinct primary level workshops to choose from, Learn it workshops complement the S.E.S.E. and Maths curriculum in a fun and engaging way. Using LEGO Education resources to predict, estimate, observe, measure, and record investigations, children will exercise scientific inquiry skills through direct hand on science, maths, engineering & technology (S.T.E.M.) activities.
Ocean Devotion – (5-8 yrs) Mayfield Library Thursday 17th (11.00 am) – invite only
Delivered by the MaREI Centre for Marine and Renewable Energy this session looks at the importance of protecting our oceans and all its inhabitants! Pupils will hear all about our seas, view a slide show on animals found at the sea shore, and do fun marine themed arts & crafts.
